Your heat pump uses a refrigerant to move heat from one location to another. When it is in cooling mode, it works exactly like an air conditioner to extract heat from indoors and exhaust it outside to a condensing unit. When the refrigerant cools down and is ready to absorb more heat, it is pumped through the system back inside.
When operating in cooling mode, your heat pump removes excess humidity from the air. Condensation can form on the interior condenser coils, which is typically sent to the condensate drain. The opposite effect happens in winter when the heat is sent outdoors; condensation can form on the exterior unit.
The Reasons Your Heat Pump Can Leak
There are number of reasons your heat pump can leak. Many are simply due to its construction. Others can signify a failing part that needs to be addressed. Severe failure may mean heat pump replacement. For example:
- Ice on the Evaporator Coil – If refrigerant levels are low in summer, condensation on the indoor evaporator coils can freeze. Ice build up impairs heat transfer and effects the efficiency of your unit. When it cycles off, the melting ice may be the leak you see.
- Issues With the Condensate Drain – The drain that removes condensation that occurs during normal operation can become clogged with debris or algae. This can cause the drain pan to overflow.
- Improper Installation – A bad installation can start problems that can cause leakage. If pipe fittings have been improperly installed, they may loosen over time, causing a leak. If the unit is not level or there is too much pressure in the system, this can also result in leaking.
