Should I Turn off the Water Before Vacation?

If you are going out of town for an extended period of time, like for a vacation or business trip, you want to have confidence that your home will be safe while you are away. Because of this, there are a number of things you should do before you leave to ensure that your home will be just as you left it when you return.

Prevent Water Damage

This is one of the most serious risks your home will face while you are gone. Pipes can burst or leak at any time, so it is always a good idea to turn off your main water supply before you leave. This way, even if a pipe breaks, there will be minimal water to spill out into your home.

Water damage prevention is so important because this type of damage is incredibly costly to fix. Depending on the extent of the damage, you may need to replace your flooring, sections of your walls, and even your furniture. We’re guessing this is not something you want to deal with upon your return from a relaxing vacation!

Minimize Fire Risk

Fire is another common hazard for homes left empty. Before you go away, be sure to turn off all lights in your home so they don’t overheat or burn out. If you like to leave some lights on to make it look like you are home, deterring possible intruders, consider installing a timer system so that the lights aren’t on the entire time you’re gone.

Conserve Energy

Of course, you want your home to be at a comfortable temperature when you return, but you also don’t want to be paying a fortune for heating and cooling a home that is unoccupied. Reset your thermostat to hold a higher temperature in the summer or a colder temperature in the winter. You might be uncomfortable for an hour or so when you return, but the energy cost savings will be well worth it.
